Dr Dorothy ChanAdvisor to Trustees
I am the Deputy Director, School of Professional and Continuing Education, The University of Hong Kong, and Head of Centre for Logistics & Transport; the Independent Non-Executive Director of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited and AMS Public Transport Limited; Chairperson of Sustainable Agricultural Development Fund Advisory Committee and Director of the TWGHs E-Co Village Board, and also a member of the Board of Governors of the Hong Kong Institute for Public Administration.
The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport has given me the professional qualifications essential for my career development. I started my career in the Transport Department of the Hong Kong Government. When I retired as the Deputy Commissioner for Transport in 2002, Hong Kong already enjoyed a world class multi-modal transport network, and I was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Government of Hong Kong for my dedicated and meritorious service in transport.
Transport supports the efficient movement of people and goods, and is vital to any economy. The global nature of the Institute has helped me to get in touch with professionals in different positions in the transport and logistics sector around the world.
I am a member of CILT Hong Kong where I served as Branch Chairperson before becoming an International Vice President of the Institute, and then International President in 2013-14. I was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in September 2015.
I continued my involvement with the Institute as Global WilAT Chairperson and then as Advisor of Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT).
As the WiLAT Global Chairperson, I was constantly aware of the importance of staying in touch with WiLAT Chairpersons in different territories, listening to them and reinforcing WiLAT’s mission. The most challenging and yet most rewarding aspects were being able to introduce WiLATs to different stakeholders, and promote better understanding within institutions and amongst employers on the role of women in the workplace.
During my years of engagement with WiLAT, I have found that despite being a male dominated industry, there is increasing interest and support for female participation in the industry. WiLAT is part of the Institute’s diversity programme and I will continue to drive female participation in our industry.
